Tektonic no thanks

Sometimes you choose not to use a particular business’s services. Maybe its they don’t look right, maybe its a gut feel, but either way you make that choice. Its really nice when later on, you can see that it was the right choice to make.

Last month I was in the market for a Virtual Private Server. I did a heavy amount of research into the different options available. I found Tektonic, which on the surface seemed ok, their prices were very reasonable, and what I could find online indicated that they were generally ok. I found the usual amount of people complaining, but with any company of any size you will get that.

I had a few questions about their service, and so before signing up, I used their online web tool to send a query with some basic questions, indicating that I was interested in using their services.Their system generated a ticket for me, and let me know that they’d be back in contact with me in 24 hours.

What was very odd was a few days later I didn’t have a response. My questions were not that scary (I asked if they had IPv6 native connectivity, and if not, if establishing a IPv6 tunnel would be acceptable). I sent them a follow up email asking if they were planning to respond. I didn’t receive a response to that either.

That was pretty much it for me, I decided at that point not use their services.

Recently I received a spam email from them, advertising their new products. That was really it for me, I sent them an email detailing why their level of service was very poor, and that their spam was the last straw. Since their website did not have any contact details, except for support@tektonic.net, I emailed abuse@ and postmaster@ to try and get some attention (abuse@ is the correct email address to use when dealing with spam, all good domains have this address. postmaster@, according to RFC standards, must be a valid box, and must be monitored by a human).

I just received a bounce back:

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at mail.tektonic.net.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

<postmaster@tektonic.net>:
user is over quota

Now I’m just laughing. For the record, in case anyone out there does a Google on Tektonic and reach this blog. I would use two tin cups and a piece of string before I used this company’s services. I really really really don’t recommend this company.

I used them for years so I could use OpenVPN to bypass restrictive client firewalls in my job as a consultant. They’ve recently changed they’re TOS, apparently, and I found out about it when they unceremoniously shut down my server for “abuse.”

I also strongly recommend going somewhere else.

Thats really good to know, its funny, the other thing I had been recently considering doing is exactly that. I have a number of clients now with very restrictive firewalls, and I’ve been toying with setting up OpenVPN in the same way as yourself. Once again, I’m glad I didn’t go with them.
